Pre-Stabilized Laser System For The Advanced Virgo Project

L.-W. Wei and F. Cleva (ARTEMIS, Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur)

Virgo is a cavity-enhanced Michelson laser interferometer built for the detection of gravitational waves. With its 3-km arm length, Virgo reached a relative strain sensitivity of the order of 1E-21 per square root of Hz. Major upgrades of Virgo are underway for even better sensitivity and hence higher detection rates of gravitational wave signals, resulting in the so-called Advanced Virgo. Increasing the optical power of the pre-stabilized laser system by tenfold is one of the major upgrades; a master-oscillator-fiber-power-amplifier architecture has been proposed as the reference design. Here we show the proposed design and the performances of the key elements to date, with a stress on noise properties of the master oscillator and the fiber power amplifiers, as well as coherent beam combination.
